Which CDL Class Do You Need?

CLASS A

Class A – Combination Vehicles

For combination vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 lbs. or more, when the vehicle being towed has a GVWR over 10,000 lbs.

Common examples:
Tractor-trailers • Truck/trailer combinations

You may need to study:
General Knowledge • Combination Vehicles • Air Brakes, if applicable • Any endorsements required for the vehicle you plan to operate.

CLASS B

Class B – Heavy Single Vehicles

For a single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 lbs. or more, or a vehicle towing another vehicle that does not meet the Class A towing threshold.

Common examples:
Large buses • School buses • Heavy straight trucks

You may need to study:
General Knowledge • Air Brakes, if applicable • Transporting Passengers for passenger vehicles • School Bus for school-bus operation • Other required endorsements.

CLASS C

Class C – Certain Passenger / Hazardous Materials Vehicles

For vehicles that do not meet the definition of Class A or Class B but require a CDL because of passenger capacity or hazardous-material requirements.

Common examples:
Certain passenger vehicles • Certain vehicles transporting hazardous materials

You may need to study:
General Knowledge • Transporting Passengers and/or Hazardous Materials • Other endorsements required for the vehicle.
